Marlin Briscoe: Omaha U. football magician
Part

the following on
Oct. 1,196 8:
Denver, Colo. (AP) —
Ccach Lou Saban of Denver
said Mon day, Marlin Briscoe,
the first Negro ever to see action at
quarterback in the American Football
league, would start Sunday in a home game
against Cincinnati.
A week earlier, at 3 p.m. CST, on
Sunday, Sept. 29, 1968, Marlin Briscoe
stood on the sidel ines watching Jim LeClair
take the snaps for his Denver Bronco team.
By 5: 30 p.m. he was in the game, behind
center,
the first
African-American
quarterback in the AFL. (Willie Thrower,
Michigan State's African-American QB
played in one game with the 1953 Chicago
Bears.)
In his 10 minutes of work, Briscoe
dazzled the Boston Patriots' defense with
fancy footwork.
"It was a historic day," Briscoe said in a
telephone interview. "I completed my first
pass and the crowd went crazy. I had only
taken six snaps in practice all season, but I
wasn't even nervous. I was just out there
having fu n. We m arched 80 yards down the
field and I scored on a 12-yard scramble."
He also earned the shot as starting
signal caller the next week against the
Bengals.
Marlin Briscoe was drafted by the
Denver B roncos in the 14th round of the
1986 NF L Draft . He was the 357th overall
pick and w as slotted to play quarterback,
wide receiver and /or defensive back. At 5foot, 10 inches and 1 73 pounds, Briscoe was
thought of by the "experts" as too small to
he a quarterback. Coach Saban thought
differently.
From t he

By year's end, he had
thrown for 14 touchdown,

weren't enough to keep him
in town, however, and he

By 1964, Briscoe (now nicknamed
"The Magician") was in control of the OU passes out of 252 attempts, The Magician

total offense, he led the squad to a 5-4 record 25 touchdowns. By season's end, he had

which still stand. Briscoe was named to the
Back of the Year."
The Magician pulled a few out of the All-Division, All-Black, All-America team
hat in 1965, guiding the Indians to a 8-2 in 1967.
"Coach Caniglia was the most
record and the Central Intercollegiate
Conference title. Named team captain for influential person in my life," Briscoe said.
1966, Briscoe saw the magic disappear.
OU's record fell to 1-9.
"I didn't know my father. When I got
drafted, Coach did a lot of background
investigation about the Broncos. He told me
their practices were all open to the public
and the media, so I had written into my
contract a provision I w ould get a three-day
tryout at quarterback. The press gave me
rave reviews. I s igned as a corner back and
emergency quarterback."
Life in the AFL started shakily for the
magic man. A pulled hamstring in pre
season 1968 hobbled him for a while. A
trade to Buffalo meant a change of position.
But... perfection was soon to come.
Acquired by the Miami Dolphins,
Briscoe played wide receiver, holder, kick
returner and quarterback during the perfect
17-0, 1972 season.
"Playing for Denver and Buffalo,"
Briscoe said, "I had my best games against
the Dolphins. When my options ran out in
Buffalo, Coach Shula told me if he couldn't
beat me, he was going to sign me."
During that perfect season, Briscoe was
3-3 in passing from the wide receiver
reverse option for 72 yards. As a wide out,
he hauled in 16 passes for 279 yards and
four touchdowns, including the first Miami
scoring toss that year.
Those accolades put Briscoe, along
with his Miami teammates, into the Florida
Sports Hall of Fame, class of2000. This was
"old hat" for "old No. 27", since he had
already been elected into the Nebraska Hall
of Fame in 1996, the UNO Hall of Fame,
and was one of four elected to the inaugural
class of the UNO Alumni Hall of Fame.
Today, Marlin Briscoe is the Assistant
Project Manager for a Boys and Girls Club
in Los Angeles helping kids find
the
"magic" in their lives.

"Bill E nglehardt could do it all. Pass, run, tackle,

"Marlin Briscoe was a great field general," Paul

"Nobody could compare to Roger Sayers when it

"Frank Hahn and Simon A. Simon were the two
best guards to p lay for UNO," Maurice Shadle said.
When asked to name the all-time great offensive

Wagner, Shadle, Cardwell, and other long-time foot
ball observers expressed different opinions.
Englehardt
Wagner, e ntering his 14th yearns athletic trainer
at UNO, selected Englehardt as the best quarterback.
"He wasn't the fastest or quickest player on the
team," Wagner said. "His greatest asset was his ability
todo everything well and do them by surprise."
Shadle, a retired Omaha World-Herald sportswriter who covered OU-UNO football from 1938 to 1976,
agreed.
"He wo uld be a great back in any formation today
except the wishbone," Shadle said. "He wasn't ex
tremely fast and he didn't have the great quickness that
so many good backs have today."
Smart
Lloyd C ardwell, who coached Omaha University
from 1947-1959, p icked Englehardt because of his play
tailing.
"He was a smart quarterback," Cardwell said. "He
«s good at reading defenses and finding the open
receiver."
Paul Bo rge, associate professor of communication
md member of the UNO athletic committee, has
followed UNO football for 30 years. He said he has not
seen another p layer as good as Englehardt.
"Englehardt could do everything and anything,"
wge said. "He was tremendously talented."

The players selected as UNO's all-time offensive
players stood out in the minds of Wayne Wagner, Paul
Borge, Maurice Shadle, Lloyd Cardwell, and Carl
Meyers. Additionally, they said there have been many
outstanding players throughout the years besides the
players mentioned.
handler. I wouldn't consider him a better all-around
player then Englehardt, but he was just as valuable
to his team."
"He could have played quarterback on an alsoran team in the NFL," Shadle said. "I don't think he
could have quarterbacked a championship team be
cause he didn't have the size of most quarterbacks."
Carl Meyers, former UNO quarterback and
assistant coach, said Briscoe was one of the best players
he has seen or coached.
"He was one of the best players in the 1960s,"
Meyers said. "He could have played anywhere in the
nation."
Exciting
"Meyers was probably the smartest player I ever
saw," Shadle said. "He was a good passer and excellent
ball handler. He was handicapped by mediocre material.
If he had the players Englehardt did, he would have
been a great quarterback."
Great faker
"Meyers was a great faker and good at play-action
passing," Borge said.
As a junior, Meyers (5-11, 170-pounds) led his team
to an 8-1-1 record and to the All-Sports Bowl. He com
pleted 12 of 24 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns
as OU beat East Central Oklahoma 34-21. He was also
voted the game's outstanding back. He recorded his
best year as a senior, passing for 1,125 yards and 15
touchdowns.
Wagner, Cardwell, and Borge agreed with each
other when selecting their all-time running back.
"Roger Sayers was another player that was essential
to his team," Wagner said. "If you gave him a hole, he
was gone."
Bears
"He made defenses look like they were standing
still," Borge said. "He was one of the fastest players I
have seen in a uniform."
Sayers is the brother of former Chicago Bears
all-pro running back Gayle Sayers.
The 5-8, 154-pound back shares the NAIA record
for longest pass reception from scrimmage, 99 yards.
He holds the UNO record for rushing average with
8.6 yards a carry.
Sayers rushed for 2,033 yards in his career and
scored 30 touchdowns. In the last three games of his
career, he carried 13 times and scored seven touch
downs.
Sayers was also a standout in track. He was clocked
at 9.4 when he twice beat the "world's fastest human,"
former Dallas Cowboy star Bob Hayes. He is a m
ember of
the NAIA track Hall of Fame and UNO's Hall of Fame.
UNO Sports Information Director Gary Anderson
called Briscoe the most exciting player he has seen.
"He was undoubtedly the most exciting and best
player I have seen in my 20 years of watching UNO
football. He probably meant more to his team than any
other player," Anderson said.
Briscoe, a 5-10, 170-pound all-pro wide receiver
during the Miami Dolphins' Super Bowl years and
member of the UNO Hall of Fame, was an All-American
in 1967. He set 22 records, 14 of which still stand. He
remains UNO's total offense leader with 6,253 career
yards.
Briscoe was drafted in the 14th round by the Denver
Broncos in 1968. He started at three different positions
in the NFL — quarterback (Denver), defensive back
and wide receiver (Buffalo), and wide receiver (Miami).
Shadle and Borge named Carl Meyers as another
good quarterback because of his ball-handling and
intelligence.
Wagner, Shadle, and Cardwell chose Joe Arenas
as Sayers' greatest running mate.
"Football fans marveled over the success Arenas
had in the NFL," Shadle said. "People always asked
me if he improved that much. I a nswered no, because I
felt he was always a great player."
"He was great at cutting back," Cardwell said.
"He didn't have great speed, but he was shifty."
Arenas played from 1947 to 1951. The 5-11, 180pound tailback averaged more than 200 yards rushing
in one season. He is a member of the UNO Hall of Fame
and a 1949 All-American.

Inseparable
Meyers said he couldn't decide between Sayers,
Louie Miloni, and Wayne Backes when selecting his
favorite back.
Miloni, a 5-5, 154-pound halfback, rushed for
592 yards his senior year. Backes, a 5-8, 170-pound
fullback, never lost a yard in his four-year career. He
rushed for 607 yards his senior year.
The 1961 team featured Meyers, Sayers, Miloni,
and Backes in the same backfield. Meyers passed for
705 yards, Sayers rushed for 707 yards, Miloni rushed
for 592 yards, and Backes rushed for 304.
"Miloni would hit a truck if he had to. "He was tough
as nails and built like a spark plug."
Tough yards
Gerald Allen, a 5-11, 195-pound running back
and defensive back, made the Associated Press Ail-
American team in 1964. He holds the UNO record for
longest interception return for a touchdown, 94 yards.
Shadle included Bill Steck as a member of his
all-time backfield because of his ability to pick up
tough yardage.
Cardwell also added Steck to his backfield. "He
was old reliable. He produced the tough yards when his
team needed it."
When selecting their best end, Wagner, Borge,
Cardwell, and Shadle singled out Randy Rotella.
"The 1954 team was an excellent team," Wagner
said. "Englehardt was the star, but Rotella was the
leader."
K. R. A nderson
"Rotella had tremendous hands," Borge said. "He
was good at catching in a crowd."
"Rotella was a tough tight end," Cardwell said.
Shadle selected Rotella and Kurt R. Anderson as
his all-time best ends.
"They are probably the best ends I c an remember,"
Shadle said. "They didn't have the important physical
tools, but they had a knack for getting open and catching
the ball."
Rotella (6-1, 195-pounds), was a 1954 Ail-American
and is a member of the UNO Hall of Fame. He caught
the winning touchdown pass from Englehardt in the
Tangerine Bowl. He was fourth in the nation his senior
year in receiving with 32 receptions for 462 yards.

Anderson (6-2, 190-pounds) was All-North Central
Conference in 1979-80. He caught 129 passes for 1,810
yards and eight touchdowns in his career. His best
season was 1979 when he finished sixth in the nation,
catching 54 passes for 817 yards and five touchdowns.

Simon (5-10, 200-pounds) and Hahn (5-10) started
as guards on the Tangerine Bowl team. They were part
of the offense that holds the UNO record for mostpok
in a season with 360, most points averaged a game with
36, and most first downs in one game with 37.
Meyers said Dan Klepper and Harlan Aden were
the best linemen to play for UNO.
"Klepper (1968 All-American) was the best p ass
blocker I can remember," Meyers said. "He was bit
(6-3, 245-pounds), strong, and fast. Aden (1965 AllAmerican) wasn't as big as Klepper, but he had more
speed. His specialty was pulling and trapping."
Shadle said 1952 All-American center Larry
Johnson (6-3, 210 pounds) and Hall of Fame center
Harold Johnk (6-4, 260-pounds) were the best offensive
linemen he had seen.
"They were awesome centers," Shadle said. "They
fired off the ball and pushed people out. They had every
thing coaches look for in players — size, speed, and
intelligence."

Briscoe Not Happy?
Marlin "The Magician" Briscoe, interviewed by the Ga

Briscoe also said that Co

"The Magician" has since had a change of heart, and has been
deactivated by the Dolphins for the remainder of the season. Quot

"Marlin Says Future Dim."
Briscoe, who led the Dolphins

Good Arm
Briscoe notes that Saban fin

starter. "He felt Tensi had a
good arm, and the size to be a
pro quarterback. Besides, the
Broncos paid a lot of mo ney to
acquire him from San Diego."
Being a benchwarmer was
frustrating for Briscoe, but he
was glad for having made the
team. "Considering all the
frustrations I had gonethrough,
it felt great just to be a part of a
pro team."
"I was really frustrated," said
Briscoe. "I know I had a lot of
talent, but no one in the NFL or
the old AFL knew much about
me."

Wide Receiver
Briscoe then signed with Buf

made him a wide receiver, d e
spite his desire to be a quarter
back.
"I was really disappointed
that the Bills did no t give me a
shot at quarterback, but I was
just glad to make the squad."
If Marlin was disappointed, he
didn't show it. He led the Amer

pass receiving in 1970 with 57
catches for 857 yards and six
touchdowns.
"O. J. Simpson couldn't be

a receiver in coll ege. He really
thought I was kidding."
Laughing Stock
But the Bills, like the Bron
cos, were the laughing stock of
the NFL when he was there. And
he played out his option again.
Briscoe said it wasn't be
cause Lou Saban came to Buf

no secret he has never been an
admirer of Saban since his Den

my contract," said Briscoe,

"But adding Lou Saban

since."
"When I cam to Miami I was
faced with an other battle. This
time I knew I would never havea
shot at quarterback. The Dol
phins had Bob Greise,who then
was emerging into a star and
has been one since."
"They wanted me to be
strictly a receiver. I k new the
competition would be fierce,
but I was determined to make
the grade."
Twilley Ahead
"During
my
first
season,
Howard Twilley was ahead of
me most of t he time. But I got a
break, Twilley got hurt during
the 1972 season, and I saw
extensive action."
Marlin, who has playedexten
sively since, says teaming with
Paul Warfield, the Dolphins AllPro receiver, has been a thrill.
"He's so smooth ancf has made
things so easy for our oth re
er
ceivers."
Hopeful
Briscoe, who has been in
jured lately, is hopeful of re
turning. "I'd like to get back into
the lineup soon. Coach Shula
still thinks I have a bright future
in the NFL."
Shula isn't t he only coach in
the NFL who thinks Briscoe is a
fine receiver. He certainly has
given many defensive backs
trouble.
Briscoe says besides playing
for Miami, th e biggest thrill for
him is having played on two
Super Bowl championship
clubs.
"Believe me , w hen I left col
lege I wondered whether I
would ever play in th e NFL, let
alone play for a world cham
pionship squad."

Five years after Marlin Briscoe moved on from OU, the Gateway did a feature on his early pro career. After a frustrating year with the Denver Broncos, Briscoe signed with the Buffalo Bills, where he played as a wide receiver, though he would have preferred to be a quarterback. After that, he went to the Miami Dolphins, where he played on two Super Bowl championship squads. At the time the article was written, he was temporarily out of service due to an injury. Just days after this article was published, Briscoe would be deactivated by the Dolphins, squelching the optimism he expressed here. <br /><br />Source: Vermaas, Herb. Pro s Draft Briscoe A nd Haas
By Rudy Smith
With the signing of Omaha
U. quarterback Marl in, the Ma
gician, Briscoe and split-end
Bill Haas to professional foot
ball contracts they will be the
fifth and sixth OU football
players to sign a pro contract
since 1964.
In 1964, Jack Petersen, a de
fensive tackle signed with the
Green Bay Packers of the NFL.
In 1965, little Ail-American
Gerald Allen signed with the
Baltimore Colts as a running
back and end. He is presently
the top ball carrier for the
Washington Redskins of the
NFL.
Big and tough Jimmy Jones,
end, was drafted the same year
by the New York Jets and af
ter being placed on waivers was
signed by the Pittsburg Steelers.
Last year OU's bruising full
back Bill Dodd signed a pro
contract with the Kansas City
Chiefs of the AFL for a cash
bonus according to I)odd.
Little All-American quarter
back, Briscoe, who set 22 OU
football records and amassed
6,253 total career yards while
on offense, was drafted by the
Denver Broncos of the Ameri
can Football League in the four
teenth round on February 1.
Haas and Briscoe led the In
dians to a 7-3 grid mark this
season and the CIC Champion
ship.
Haas and Briscoe were both

All-CIC and All-District 11
selections.
Bill who was honorable men
tion All-American was drafted
in the eleventh round by the
Minnesota Vikings in the Na
tional Football League.
He has another year of eli
gibility remaining but is ex
pected to bypass it for a pos
sible pro career.
Haas Nine TD's
As a split-end, Bill caught
55 career passes, for 850 yards
and nine touchdowns. He kicked
19 extra points last season to
lead the team in scoring with
73 points.
Topping a brilliant senior sea
son Briscoe was selected as the
World-Heralds Athlete of the
Year. Rocket Roger Sayers,
OU's Olympic sprinter was the
the other OU recipient of the
award. Sayers, brother of OU
gridder Ron Sayers, received it
in 1962.
At the Annual Omaha Sportcasters banquet in January
Haas and Briscoe were among
ten outstanding Nebraska gridders to receive Gold Helmet
awards for brilliant gridiron
performance.
"If they, Bill and Marlin, are
given the opportunity to show
their potential I'm sure they'll
make it as pros," said head
football coach A1 Caniglia.
Scouts Want Films
According to Caniglia every
AFL and NFL team has re
quested films on the two draft
ees.
"Haas has the ability," he
said, "but the determining fac
tor will be the competition he
will encounter in training camp.
By that I mean the number of
veterans manning the split-end
post."
Caniglia also stated that ev
ery scout that has requested
films on Briscoe were very
much impressed and their only
reservations being his height,
thus accounting for his selec
tion in the fourteenth round.
Stan Jones of the Denver
Broncos feels South High grad
Briscoe will help them as a
quarterback or a defensive back.
Dave Smith of the New Or
leans Saints said of the Ma
gician, "He's got the greatest
arm I have ever seen on any
quarterback-college or pro. He's
the only man I have ever seen
who can run to his left and
throw the ball righthanded 55
yards through the air with com
plete accuracy."
If he makes it as a pro quar
terback, Marlin will be the first
Negro to do it at that position
but he feels he can "definitely
make it as a quarterback" be
cause of his leadership ability,
brain power and perfect me
chanical execution of plays.
Ralston High graduate Haaand Briscoe are both cagers and
scoring in double figures for
the Indians. Haas, an Academic
All-American, has been selected
to the All-CIC cage team twice.
He is presently the team'.second leading scorer and ranks
sixth on the all time scoring
list.

OU Hero Briscoe Leaves
Behind Passable Career
By Gary Anderson
An era has ended.
In a blaze of glory last Saturday against South Dakota,
Marlin Briscoe ended an illustri
ous four-year career. He tied his
own record of 19 completions,
while engineering a 27-20 win
over a team Omaha had failed to
defeat in ten previous encounters.
The senior magician who was
unheralded after a high school
career with Omaha South now
holds 21 OU career and season records.
Saturday Briscoe was at his
artistic best, connecting on 19
of 34 passes for 275 yards and
rushing for 52 yards. Five of
his completions came during a
courageous fourth-quartsr-comeback en route to the winning
score.
Leading 20-7 at the half, Oma
ha fell to the inspired rush of
the Coyotes, who tied the game
20-20 early in the fourth period.
Briscoe Scrambles
Jim Foster scored the TD,
capping a three-play 17-yard
march after a Ray Shaw fumble
of a punt attempt.
After stalling the South Dakotans and regaining the ball
on a punt on the OU 14, Briscoe
breathed life into the sputtering Indian attack.
Scrambling the best he has
scrambled all season, Briscoe
marched the Indians 86 yards
in 13 plays to snuff out the
brief Coyote hopes for victory.
During this winning drive,
Briscoe completed five passes to
get to the Coyote nine, where
Pat Smagacz rambled into the
end-zone»for the winning score
with only 2:44 left in the game.
Omaha dominated the first
half with two touchdowns in
the first quarter and one in the
second.
Briscoe fired a 77-yard strike
to Bill Haas to open the scoring.
Briscoe hit Tom McKeman for
nine yards for the second score.
After the Sodaks scored on a
41-yard second quarter TD, drive
Bill Haas made the catch of the
day: a four-yard Briscoe aerial.
The Coyotes' rejuvenated sec
ond-half attack, led by halfback
Steve Chambers d o m i n a t e d
most of the second half leading
to Omaha's winning touchdown
drive.
Chambers fooled the Indian
secondary with a halfback pass
to Roger Larson that covered
41 yards.
The young Omaha defense
played one of their best games
in the line, stopping heralded
fullback John Biezuns for 11
yards on five trips.
The secondary was weakened
by the loss of Steve Haborak
who was out with a bout with
the flu. Rick Davis did an out
standing job of filling in con
sidering he was playing a
strange position.
I
Briscoe . . . Era Ends
Haas leaped high to grab the
ball and then barely fell in the
end zone for his 73rd point of
the season.
Briscoe "All-American"
The winning touchdown drive
exemplifies coach A1 Caniglia's
high regard for Briscoe.
"He can do more to pick up a
team than any kid we've had,"
Caniglia said. "If any kid ever
was an Ail-American, this kid
is."
Bill Haas, also a senior the
1968 Indians will sorely miss,
gathered in eight passes for 177
yards and two touchdowns. The
two TD's enabled Haas to lead
all Omaha scorers with 73
points.
The big story was Briscoe,
however, as he treated the turn
out of 5127 with his usual ex
citing performance.
Briscoe ends the season in ex
cellent position to attain AllAmerica honors as well as a high spot in the pro draft some
time next month.
The little kid who used to
idolize Bill Englehardt, leaves
college competition as perhaps
the greatest athlete ever to
play here.

At Ring Side
with
Rudy Smith
Marlin Briscoe no doubt has been called many things in his
lifetime, some good, some bad, and both coming from the tongues
of friend and foe.
Marlin the Magician as he is best known is a player (guy)
you have to study, like music, to appreciate his finesse and mastery
while performing on the gridiron.
He may be called the new blood to last year s 1-9 team, 01
the old man on this year's team due to his experience, but one
thing is certain, and that is the fact that he is the archangel of
the team.
What makes Marlin or any quarterback exceptional? Is it his
play selection? Is it his passing and scrambling? Or is it the
blocking given him by the forward wall ?
Blocking, passing and scrambling all help to make a quarteiback exceptional but it doesn't start there.
To the amazement of a few people it starts long before the
snap of the ball to the field general but — when the quarterback
enters the huddle. From that second on he's in command.
QB . . . Mr. Know It All
In the huddle he must call the play clearly and concisely and
with authority. If a player has doubts about his assignment he
consults the quarterback, Mr. Know It All.
When the huddle breaks the team trots up to the line of
scrimmage.
At the line of scrimmage timing is important. The Indians
quarterback, which is usually Briscoe, gets his team set and then
in one smooth motion and in unison suddenly clashes with force.
Timing is important and without it the objective of getting
the jump on the defensive team is lost.
Briscoe does all this well, that is with a well disciplined team,
such as the OU Indians, and once the play gets underway he
seems to demoralize the defense with his passing brilliance or
with his scrambling ventures whether it be off the bootleg or the
busted play.
None the less, Marlin seems to at least for the present throw
a wrench into the misconception that the'scrambling quarterback
is a marked back.
" I d e s O f M arch"
People often overlook the fact that to put a mark on him you
must first have to catch him and Marlin doesn't have the tendency
to stand on his head waiting for a soothsayer to come innocently
to tell him all about the "Ides of March".
When you're busy breaking records, going to school, and
student teaching you don't have time for soothsayers.
The archangel owns eleven OU football records and is tied
for another going into this year's football season and he has tied
or broken four since the season opener.
And after all has been said and done what does he do for an
encore? All-American honors?
Let's Not Discriminate
Who said that women aren't sports inclined. The Tomahawk
has as its sports editor, a female. Her name is Linda Preisman.
She has had plenty of experience as Gateway editor and
sports editor.
Let's not discriminate because of sex at least not now.

Scrambling Red Quarterback Briscoe (27) Finally Gets Nailed By Garrison and Haborak (44).
Reds Win Spring Squad Clash 31-19
By Dan Parker
The 1967 spring drills
proved successful for Coach
A1 Caniglia and his staff as
the Reds beat the Whites
31-19 in the annual intrasquad game Tuesday at
Westside High School.
More than 1,200 spec
tators saw the Red victory
sparked by Little Ail-Amer
ican candidate Marlin Bris
coe.
The classy field general hit
13 out of 27 passes for 147
yards, and scrambled for 52
yards in 11 carries, dazzling
the defense with his double
threat.
White quarterback, Gary
Peters, the 26-year-old exMarine, showed great promise
as the number two signal caller.
Hitting 19 out of 32 passes in
a straight dropback style for
163 yards, he bested Briscoe by
nearly 20 yards. However, their
running did not compare.
Peter's' top receivers were
Cincinatti U. transfer Tom McKernan and Emil Steidel.
McKernan grabbed four tosses
for 68 yards and two touch
downs while Stiedel's five
catches tallied 60 yards.
All CIC-End Bill Haas and
sophomore flanker Gary Paporello were Briscoe's best
targets. Haas had three key
catches for 47 yards and one
touchdown, and "Pap" caught
three straight sideline passes,
as the Beds scored at the end
of the first half.
The Reds scored first on a
three-yard plunge by Rick Davis
with eight seconds left in the
first quarter. Helped along by
penalties, the Whites scored on
a seven yard flare pass from
Peters to McKernan.
McKernan's second score put
the Whites ahead 13-6 as Peters
rifled over the middle to him for
20 yards.
Briscoe showed his ability
to pick plays as the clock was
running out in the. first half.
He marched his company 55
yards in six plays. The score
was deadlocked 13-13 as
Haas' spectacular end zone
catch ended first half play.
Scoring twice in the third
quarter put the Reds up 25-13.
With 6:47 left in the third
quarter, tackle Bsrnie Kanger
intercepted a deflected Peters'
pass and romped 32 yards to
score. The second score came as
Briscoe scored on a three yard
keeper around the right end.
Ray Shaw replaced Briscoe
for the Reds in the fourth quar
ter, and hit two out of four
passes for 60 yards and one
touchdown. Shaw's TD pass
came as he hit Stan Standifer
on a 49 yard scoring play.
Wrestling star — converted
football fullback — guard, Roy
Washington stole a Shaw handoff and scampered 76 yards to
score ending the game.
"Washington is a good com
petitor. Next fall we'll use him
more in spots on defense so the
opponent can't take advantage
of his size," Caniglia explained.
Dom Polifrone and Buddy
Belitz spiced the defense for the
Whites, as did E. G. Owen and
Lew Garrison for the Reds.
G a r r i s o n intercepted a
Briscoe pass and galloped all
over the field on the return.
Garrison's team members
have labeled him "160 pounds
of sheer guts."
White back Robin Cummingsled all rushers with 101 yards in
12 carries. He was followed by
the Red's Ron Sayers who
rambled for 78 yards in 9 car
ries.
Caniglia also sited the run
ning of Pat Smagacz and Lloyd
Williams of the Whites, and
Greg Kavan of the Reds.
The only injury of the game
came as veteran tackle Tom
Hutchinson injured his left
knee. The extent of the injuryis not yet known, but after
consulting doctors Wednes
day Hutch says surgery is
required.
"All in all we are happy with
the scrimmage. Sayers ran well,
Briscoe illustrated his scram
bling ability, Peters threw well
out of the pocket, and all the
receivers looked real good."
"We are lacking line depth,
and this became apparent
when the squad was split.
However, our
recruitment
should help the line problems
and we are looking forward to
next fall," the coach con
cluded.
The Indians will open against
North Dakota State on Sep
tember 16 at Rosenblatt Sta
dium.

At Ring Side
with
John Whisman
Although the football season isn't even around the corner
yet, spring drills indicate a return to success by the 1967 Indians.
With the return of Marlin Briscoe to the quarterback
helm, the Indians should win the conference again. With
the versatile magician again calling signals OU must be
in the title picture.
After the bleak 1-9 record last year the Indians will of course
be trying to reverse the figures.
In a recent interview with Briscoe, the veteran stated that
this year's Spring drills have the same potential as the 8-2 team
of 1965.
Briscoe added that although this year's squad doesn't
have the '65 size they are quicker, faster and have a
great attitude.
Commenting on the scrimmage held last Friday Briscoe stated
that the defense hit harder than any unit he's seen since he was a
freshman.
Keys To Success: Haas, Davis
With the return of Briscoe the offense should be able to
open up and play a wide open game again. The scrambling Briscoe
is the reason for the diversified attack.
When injured last year, Head
Coach A1 Caniglia was forced
to use Bill Haas as the number
one signal caller. With Haas at
the helm the offense was lim
ited in its effectiveness, because
of Haas' drop-back style. The
offense just wasn't used to that
type of attack.
When asked to give away
Some of his secrets of success
Briscoe revealed a couple of
sure keys. These two keys
are Bill Haas and Rick Davis
as pass receivers.
Briscoe said that Haas was
his favorite target on short
yardage situations. The reason
for this being that Iiaas is big,
has strong hands and he's hard
for opponents to bring down.
Rick Davis was Briscoe's
favorite target on long yardSignal Caller . .. Briscoe
age plays. Davis is considered
a double threat by Briscoe.
Davis has the uncanny ability to get loose for the bomb, catch
the ball and head for the goal line.
This same combination of Briscoe to Haas, or Briscoe to
Davis brought good results in '65 and should bring the same this
year.
Halfback To Quarterback
Reminising with Briscoe brought peculiar answers by the
signal caller. Briscoe said he began playing football early in
grade school. He wanted to be halfback but since his early teams
needed a quarterback, and he threw the ball the best he was
drafted.
Sice those early days of sandlot ball Briscoe has been a
quarterback.
When asked to answer what his greatest thrill in
football was Briscoe, puzzled for a moment, answered
"playing defense his freshman year at OU."
When Briscoe enrolled in 1964 the Indians had a great
quarterback in Carl Meyers so Briscoe was forced to play defense
for a time.
As a quarterback Briscoe recalls the comeback victory
over Pittsburg State in 1965 for the CIC crown as his
biggest thrill while playing quarterback.
Until last year Briscoe could not remember ever sitting out
so many games. This he said was his lowest ebb, not being able
to help his team.
Plans Include Pro's
Publicity doesn't seem to bother the cool, modest field gen
eral. He said that he feels no pressure from any publicity he
receives.
Much publicity was given him last year when he was in
jured for the season. Coach Caniglia was accused of gearing the
team around Briscoe, which he didn't.
The offense was geared around the wide open style
that the Indians were allowed because of the scrambling
Briscoe. When the injury occurred Caniglia was unable
to find another scrambler like Briscoe.
With two receivers like Haas and Davis the passing attack
should click well.
With backs like Greg Kavan, Steve Havorak, Gary Papporella
and Ron Sayers pounding into the line, defensive lines will
probably be bruised badly by Sunday morning.
Pro footall is in Briscoe's plans. Briscoe said he would very
much like to play pro if he has the ability at either offensive
quarterback or as a defensive back. Teams from both the AFL
and NFL have approached him.

THE OU QB - Briscoe
May Piay Again In 1967
"I feel completely helpless," Marlin Briscoe said, "Just
knowing that I might be able to help the team."
Briscoe, THE quarterback at OU is sidelined for the entire
season, with a fractured vertebra.
No one knows for certain when Briscoe sustained the ominous
neck injury.
"I can't say when it happened," Briscoe said.
Six Weeks To Mend
Briscoe said five doctors have gone over his X-rays and all
agree it will take six weeks to mend the fracture. Briscoe said
the doctors told him to withhold his activities to a limited state.
The big question in the minds of fans, coaches and everyone
else: Will Marlin play next year?
The 1966 season would have been his senior year in
football, but with his injury there may be a chance for him
to play next year, when he becomes an academic senior.
Briscoe said that they will try to appeal to the Athletic
Board for eligibility next season. The outcome won't be known
for a while.
"I'd like to go to every game, both home and away," Briscoe
said, "But I'd just be taking up a seat on the bench."
Take a man's leg away and he can't get along very well.
This is the same in the case of Marlin, "The Magician". Take
football away from him and he can't get along very well.
Playing Since
6ih Grade
"I've been playing football since my sixth grade," Bricoe said,
"And this is the first year I've had to sit on the sidelines."
Even with a fractured neck vertebra Marlin would like to
play. He said it doesn't hurt him physically. It's just mental
anguish from not being able to play.
"Football is a part of me," he said, "And now that part is
gone."

Description
An account of the resource
What should have been the crowning year of Marlin Briscoe's career with OU football evaporated when a neck injury put him off the field for the entire season. Briscoe was deeply frustrated by this, saying, "I feel completely helpless . . . Just knowing that I might be able to help the team. . . . Football is a part of me . . . And now that part is gone." Thankfully, the CIC would grant Briscoe another chance for a senior year in football, and he would play for OU in 1967. <br /><br />Source: "The OU QB -- Briscoe May Play Again in 1967." <em>Gateway</em>. Quarterback Glimpses
With spring football workouts a week old, pigskin coach A
Caniglia has his eye on four quarterback candidates.
Marlin Briscoe
Lew Garrison
Heading the list is All-CIC
quarterback Marlin Briscoe from
Omaha South. Last year as a
junior the magician established
himself as one of the better quarterbacks in the nation. He gained
2181 total yards to rank fourth
in the nation in the NCAA college division. He was fifth in total offense on NAIA charts after
picking up over 1300 total yards.
Other honors include membership on the Lincoln Journal and
Star All-Nebraska college team,
honorable mention—Little AllAmerican. His teammates also
chose him outstanding back.
Magic Marlin set three individual school records last year:
his passing of 1668 yards, 18
touchdown passes and 2181 total
offensive yards.
He's a natural choice for AllAmerican honors next season.
Nicknamed the "flea," earned
his monogram primarily as a defensive back. The little guv
demonstrated alertness and good
speed.
Last year he showed he C0llld

He also engineered a
touchdown drive against Emporia
gtate
His greatest assets aie his gieat
quickness. Last season
he completed three passes for 70
yards,
Garrison will see most of his
action as a defensive safety. Hes
a two-year letterman and will b e
a junior. Not out for spring
drills, he's playing on OU's baseball team.

Haas started out last year as
third-string quarterback. After
the opener with Idaho State, he
realized he would see little action
behind Briscoe. He then asked
Caniglia for a chance at split
end. With less than a week of
practice, he earned the job.
The versatile athlete caught 1 7
passes lor 257 yards, averaging
15.1 and developed into an ex
cellent receiver. Not particularly
fast, he has the ability to get
open.
Slated for end duty again, as a
quarterback he could provide
much needed insurance.

Briscoe Deals Aces
Mid-Game Change Lifts
Indians To 21-6 Victory
by Mike Moran
Omaha
University's
junior
quarterback, Mariin Briscoe, a
harried signal caller the first
thirty minutes, took charge in the
second half and led the Indians
to a 21-6 win over Morningside
last Saturday before 5,000 fans
at OU Stadium.
Playing in 75 degree weather,
the Indians limped through a
first half that saw Morningside
score once on a 46 yard run by
halfback Gary Beaubien.
Two Omaha drives were foiled
on fourth down within the 15
as the Indian offense sputtered
and coughed during the early go
ing.
Two Games?
After intermission, the story
changed themes rapidly as Oma
ha took complete command with
style. Briscoe, suddenly daring
as a riverboat gambler, wheeled
and dealed the Red and Black
83 yards to paydirt in four min
utes of the third stanza.
Mariin followed Harlan Aden
to his right for a three yard scor
ing jaunt for the tally that tied
it at 6-6. George Blankenship's
placement gave OU a lead it
never lost.
A pass interference call and a
30 yard sprint by halfback Gerry
Allen set up Briscoe's touchdown.
Moments later the Indians
were back for more. Briscoe's
bullet to flanker Rick Davis was
good for 40 yards and a first and
goal from the eight. Two plays
later, Bill Dodd hammered his
way into the end zone for the
second Omaha touchdown.
Blankenship was accurate again
from placement and the score
board blinked 14-7 as the third
quarter ended.
OU's tough-as-nails defense
got the ball back again and Mar
iin wasted no time in registering
another six points. A nifty fake
to Dodd and one quick pump of
Briscoe's right arm found Davis
alone in the flat at the Morning
side 35. Ricky cut to his left and
outran two Chief defenders the
rest of the way for a 63 yard
scoring jaunt with ten minutes
remaining to play. Again, Blank
enship's toe was good and 21
points flashed on the OU board.
Big Change
Omaha's pro-set offense hur
tled into second gear during the
decisive second half and the sta
tistics prove it. Briscoe completed
11 of 20 tosses for 195 yards. Lit
tle Ail-American Allen didn't
tarnish his reputation with 128
yards on 25 carries in a work
horse performance.
The real key lay in the ability
of the OU defense to recover
from a first half lashing that
saw the Chiefs rack up 135 yards
on the ground.
The Indian secondary held up
expertly and turned back a min
imal Morningside air threat. In
terceptions by Don Crum and
Lew Garrison stymied threats in
the second half.
Old Stuff
The win gives OU a 13-12 lead
in the oldest series in Omaha
history. The two teams first met
in 1935. Morningside is now 1-2
on the season. Omaha is 2-1 and
must begin the long grind that
includes Bradley, Eastern NewMexico and Drake in addition to
CIC rivals.
