Marlin Briscoe #27 OU Quarterback Figurine
In 2009, OU quarterback Marlin Briscoe was immortalized with a 6 3/4" tall figurine. The plastic figure is painted gold, with a wash of black paint to highlight details. A white plastic sign on the base advertises the sponsor, OrthoWest Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Specialists. The figurine was manufactured by Destroyer Promotional Products, LLC, and marketed as an "action figure" although it has no moving parts.
Darby Reiners, Hagel Fellow in UNO Libraries' Archives and Special Collections, photographed the figurine for this exhibit.
The original box for the Marlin Briscoe figurine is something of an anacronism. Because it was manufactured in 2009 as a promotional item for the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks football team, it features UNO branding and the image of the Mavs' mascot. Briscoe, of course, never played for the UNO Mavs, but rather for their predecessor, the University of Omaha Indians. However, packaging featuring OU branding and the old mascot would not have appealed to current fans.
In 2016, Jackie Mitchell of UNO Libraries' Creative Production Lab created a 3D scan of the Marlin Briscoe figurine. This video showcases the process of creating that 3D model, rotating the model so the sculpture can be seen from all angles.
